Scottish Power is owned by Iberdrola, a Spanish company. The company is one of the largest suppliers of gas and electricity to homes in the UK, with 5.2 million customers.

In 1995 Scottish Power bought MANWEB (Merseyside And North Wales Electricity Board) and merged it into the company.

The Scottish Hydro brand supplies homes across Scotland.

Early years

In 1901 they began in Glasgow as Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company, one of the earliest electric companies founded in the United Kingdom. Interestingly, the company employed John Logie Baird, the inventor of the television, during these early years.

Just over half a century later, Clyde Valley, the electric company UK residents had come to know and trust, became SSEB (South of Scotland Electricity Board) through a merger which played a huge role in bringing the company where it is today.
